Setting up with Highlight
This MCP is not yet compatible with Highlight’s one-click setup. However, you can still use it with Highlight by following these steps:
- Download and install Highlight from highlightai.com/download
- Navigate to the plugins tab and select "Add Custom Plugin"
-
Configure the plugin with the settings below
Plugin Name
Mcp Server DnsCommand (node, npx, python, etc.)Please refer to the README for specific instructions on how to obtain API keys or other required environment variables.
- Enable "Start Automatically" if you want the plugin to start when Highlight launches
From the repository
Run npx mcp-server-dns or configure as an MCP server in Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, or any MCP client using the provided JSON configuration. The server exposes five tools: dns_lookup, reverse_dns, resolve_all, check_nameservers, and whois.
dns_lookup
Look up DNS records for a domain. Returns A, AAAA, MX, TXT, NS, CNAME, SOA, SRV, or PTR records.
reverse_dns
Perform a reverse DNS (PTR) lookup on an IP address.
resolve_all
Resolve all common DNS record types (A, AAAA, MX, TXT, NS, CNAME) for a domain in one call.
check_nameservers
Get the nameserver (NS) records for a domain.
whois
Query WHOIS data for a domain. Uses IANA and follows referrals to registrar WHOIS servers.

mcp-server-dns
DNS lookups, reverse DNS, WHOIS, and domain checks from your AI assistant. No API keys, no config. Powered by Node.js built-in DNS.
npx mcp-server-dns
> Works with Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code Copilot, and any MCP client. Uses Node.js native dns module, so there's nothing to sign up for.

Why
DNS and WHOIS lookups come up more often than you'd think during development. Debugging email delivery? You need MX records. Setting up a new domain? Check the nameservers. Investigating a suspicious URL? WHOIS tells you who owns it. The existing MCP options for this require paid API keys (like WhoisXML API). This server uses Node.js built-in DNS resolution and public WHOIS servers, so it works out of the box with zero accounts or credentials.

| resolve_all | Resolve A, AAAA, MX, TXT, NS, CNAME in one call |
| check_nameservers | Get nameserver (NS) records for a domain |
